Description: Coyotes, like people, will eat almost anything. This young female was walking briskly on the top of crusty snow on a beautiful, sunny, winter afternoon. She heard a mouse scratching around on the ground about one foot below the surface. Quietly walking closer, tipping her head back and forth, she pinpointed the mouse's location. She jumped high in the air so her weight would break through the crust and pinned the mouse on the ground with her front feet. Picking up the live mouse with her teeth, she flipped it over her head. The mouse landed on the hard snow and faced the coyote. The mouse had no easy escape, and obviously disoriented, ran between thecoyote's feet. The coyote danced around and nipped at the mouse, flipping it in the air several times. Eventually the mouse just sat on the snow lookingup at the coyote. The coyote stood on her hind legs and pounced once againon the quiet mouse. Then the coyote swallowed it head first and walked away.
