Description: Long-tailed weasels are specialized hunters of small mammals and are adapted to live under the snow. They have the perfect shape to burrow in soft snow and follow the tunnels made by rodents. Their short legs and long neck enable them to move their prey in small tight spaces. Burrowing down into the snow allows them to escape the bitter cold under a clear night sky and use the snow’s insulating advantage and live in the subnivian runways and nests of voles and mice. The weasels spend relatively little time on the top of the snow, but their tracks can be seen quite often zigzagging around for dozens of yards only to disappear at a small round hole in the snow’s crust.
