Native Americans gave the name "song dog" to the coyote. Lewis and Clark
called them "prairie wolves." Their vocalizations include yips, barks, and
howls. One coyote can sound like three or four. This individual howled for
five seconds or so and then stood and listened. Another coyote answered him.
He looked in that direction and howled again. The next time he listened,
still another coyote responded from a different direction. He turned,
looked, and answered back. He spun around, howling and barking in six
different directions for about ten minutes, trying to tell everyone in the
neighborhood all he could.
