Description
Elk herds travel as efficiently as possible. They choose routes that have the best footing and consume the least amount of energy. These elk were moving across open land along the Lamar River. They were not in a hurry, and the most efficient way to travel was single file, letting the first few individuals do all the work of breaking trail through the deep snow.
