Sometimes individuals in a herd of ungulates will fall asleep and not notice when the rest of the bunch leaves. This young bison woke up to find herself alone. The rest of the herd had left a maze of tracks in the snow sitting on the ice of the Yellowstone River. She walked along the main trail looking all around with her nose held high to try to smell and see her family nearby. She went down the trail to the upper right in this photograph and then came back and followed the trail to the left side. The herd was off to the left, but now over a half mile in the distance and out of sight to her yet.
